Gates of the Arctic National Park is 8.4 million acres with no roads, trails, or other man made improvements. Even the National Park Service Headquarters is located outside of the Park boundaries, in Bettles, right next to the air strip. We spent an hour here before heading into the Park, re-learning all our bear safety tips and other bush recommendations. We also watched a fascinating short film about the establishment of the Gates. Oh, and this was also the last place I was able to charge my phone and get running water and use a toilet, before heading into the real wilderness. Thank goodness for wilderness!!!
